AMD to Facebook: It's the Benchmarks

A Facebook exec caused a bit of a stir at last month's GigaOm's Structure 09 conference when he complained that the newest generation of processors from AMD and Intel were not living up to their performance billing. That had to hurt AMD (NYSE: AMD), a major sponsor of the show. Margaret Lewis, a product marketing director at AMD, said in a blog post, "It was hard not to squirm in my seat."
"The biggest thing ... was less-than-anticipated performance gains from new microarchitectures, so new CPUs from guys like Intel and AMD. The performance gains they're touting in the press, we're not seeing in our applications," Jonathan Heiliger, Facebook's vice president of technical operations, said at the time.
"As an industry, we need to accept that he makes some good points," he wrote. "While in raw, classic benchmark terms, we continue to deliver great leaps in performance, I suspect the Facebook IT and programming model doesn’t look like 'classic benchmarks.' It's probably more PHP and Java than C++."

All Core i7 Models

All other Intel processors use an external memory controller located in the north bridge chip (also known as Memory Controller Hub, MCH). This means that other Intel processors depend on the chipset (and therefore, on the motherboard) to determine the type and amount of memory you can install on the computer. Since Core i7 memory controller is embedded in the processor, it's the processor (and not the chipset) who determines which technology and amount of memory you may have installed on your system. The motherboard, however, may impose a limitation on the amount of memory you can install. The memory controller integrated on Core i7 accepts only DDR3 memory (up to 1.6 V, memory modules which require more voltage than this will not work and may even damage the processor) and supports the new triple-channel architecture. The models launched so far support only DDR3-800 and DDR3-1066 modules.
Core i7 is the first Intel processor with an integrated memory controller, feature available on AMD processors since Athlon 64. It is based on Core architecture, like Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad, but with several enhancements to increase performance (Nehalem microarchitecture) and using a new socket called LGA 1366.

Intel Core 2 Extreme - Benchmarking Conroe

Intel's new Core 2 CPUs are probably the most anticipated processors yet to ship since AMD's first Athlon 64. In many ways, Intel's new desktop CPUs, set to launch in July, are the most important CPU products for the company since the original P6 processor in 1995. Intel has been promising lower power utilization and greater performance.We've described the Core 2 architecture back in March. The Core 2 microarchitecture gives us some clues as to why performance might be better. Conroe is a four-wide architecture, so can issue four instructions per clock, as opposed to the three-wide used in NetBurst and Athlon 64 architectures. The Core 2 will also contain a full 128-bit wide SSE (Streaming SIMD (single instruction, multiple data) Extensions) engine that can execute one SIMD instruction per clock. The Extreme and higher-end mainstream desktop CPUs will offer 4MB of shared L2 cache. Finally, the use of micro-ops and macro-ops fusion, which can combine certain types of instructions as they come into the pipeline, enhances performance.
Intel also had two systems set up, both with Core 2 Extreme CPUs. Please note that these were systems configured and built by Intel. We did have full freedom to look at the BIOS settings, as well as run the tests we performed on our own, with no guidance from the Intel staff present. Here's how the systems were configured:

Intel Braidwood technology is based on a flash memory module.

Intel appears ready to take another crack at flash memory-based acceleration--this time offering it with future chipsets. "Braidwood is a flash memory technology that provides faster boot-up time, faster application launch, and a snappier, more responsive system," said Rob Crooke, vice president and general manager of Intel's Business Client Group, speaking during a presentation streamed over the Web from the Computex conference in Taipei, Taiwan, earlier this week.
The architecture accelerates I/O (input/output) accesses by saving that data to flash memory, according to Crooke. In a demonstration at Computex, Crooke showed Braidwood "caching the I/O...And then, when it launches that application again, it happens very quickly," he said. On another front, Crooke also talked about the mainstreaming of Intel's Nehalem Core i7 desktop chips, which are currently limited to high-end enthusiast systems. Due later this year, the "Lynnfield" processor is a new four-core, eight-thread processor that will be paired with the P55 Express chipset. Threads essentially double the number of tasks a processor can perform.
Braidwood will be offered with the future "5 Series" chipset family--which is Intel's first single-chip chipset--and the future "Clarkdale" processor (see discussion below). Users can expect 40 percent better performance on widely used SPECint benchmarks with the Lynnfield-based platform, compared with last year's mainstream Core Q9650 processor-based technology, Crooke said.

AMD answers Intel with 'Congo,' HP laptop

AMD is aiming its Neo technology at the ultra-thin laptop market. This is the same market that Intel has addressed for a long time with its ULV (ultra-low-voltage) chips. However, until very recently, laptops using Intel's ULV chips were expensive "executive jewelry," as Intel CEO Paul Otellini has described the segment. (Think: $2,000-and-up Sony That was then. Intel now targets its ULV silicon at inexpensive ultra-thin laptops. It's probably safe to say that AMD beat Intel to the punch (and got Intel's attention) when HP announced the 0.9-inch-thick, $700 dv2 laptop at CES in January, sporting the first Neo chip.
Advanced Micro Devices will debut its dual-core low-power Athlon chip technology on an updated laptop from Hewlett-Packard next week. This will be followed by "Congo" low-power silicon later this year.The dual-core Neo chip used in the updated HP dv2 (which is exclusive to HP) will be followed by AMD's Congo technology, due in the third quarter, which integrates AMD's HD3200 graphics, an improvement over the current "Yukon" platform. The all-important power envelope--that, after all, is what sets the technology apart from mainstream mobile silicon--of the whole package including the graphics is expected to be about the same as the first-generation Neo, according to AMD.
One of the challenges that AMD faces is benchmarks. This CNET review of the first HP dv2 laptop with the initial Neo chip said that though the "1.6 GHz Neo CPU MV-40 has enough processing power to run Windows Vista smoothly, something that has tripped up Intel-Atom-powered systems" when "running multiple apps simultaneously, none of these low-power, single-core CPUs were particularly impressive, and the Neo and Atom were essentially tied in our multitasking test. By way of comparison, a standard Intel Core 2 Duo ULV (ultra-low voltage) processor, as found in more expensive 12-inch laptops, easily beats them all."

Intel Shows First Working Moorestown Prototypes

Moorestown is a chip platform designed for handheld computers that Intel calls mobile Internet devices (MIDs). The heart of Moorestown is a more power-efficient version of the Atom processor, named Lincroft, which is paired with a chipset called Langwell. Intel claims Moorestown uses one-fiftieth the idle power of its predecessor, the Menlow platform. The new platform is available with a range of wireless options, including Wi-Fi, WiMax and 3G cellular connectivity.Engineers managed to get the three devices working and ready for Computex in less than two months, a source familiar with the situation said, adding that Intel originally hoped to show five working prototypes at the show.
Anand Chandrasekher, the senior vice president of Intel's ultra mobility group, showed off a handful of sleek prototype mobile devices containing its upcoming Moorestown platform at the Computex exhibition in Taipei on Thursday.During his speech, Chandrasekher was joined on stage by executives from hardware makers Inventec Appliances, Quanta Computer and Elektrobit, who all have working handheld devices based on the chips. The devices were all running the Moblin 2.0 version of Linux and are expected to hit the market early next year, company executives said.While Moorestown is nearing volume production, the current MID platform -- called Menlow -- continues to be used in new designs, a trend that is likely to continue into next year and overlap with the availability of Moorestown, Chandrasekher said.

Intel Stops Core i7 940, 965

The quad-core 2.93GHz Intel Core i7 940 would be the first Nehalem processor to be phased out. Intel cites in a statement, "market demand for the same has moved to other products. Following the Core i7 940, Intel will next discontinue production of high-end quad-core 3.2GHz Intel Core i7 965 Extreme Edition. It's hardly been a year since Intel launched it's Core i7 CPU but after Intel demonstrated 32nm Westmere chips in mid-February, this shift from Nehalem architecture to 32nm Westmere was obvious.
Intel Nehalem architecture based Intel Core i7 940 processor will be phased out later this year. Ironically, Intel Core i7 940 was one of the first processors based on Nehalem architecture launched in November 2008. Consumers can confirm their Core i7 940 orders till Sept. 4 this year and after that it would be officially unavailable.Intel is on tarck according to it's roadmap, the 32nm Westmere chips was planned for this year. However, Nehalem chips will be available (read shipped) throughout 2009.

Intel's Grove: Something foul in Silicon Valley

Grove spoke after receiving a lifetime achievement award at the 37th annual National Inventors Hall of Fame induction ceremony gala. The awards, sponsored by nonprofit Invent Now, also recognized 15 pioneers in the semiconductor and related industries.Grove called this a break from past practice. "The most important invention of our industry, the invention of the transistor, was licensed by AT&T for $25,000," he said. "This allowed the transistor industry to develop and become a flourishing manufacturing industry in the United States."
Speaking to a diverse Silicon Valley audience that included Gordon Moore (founder of both Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel); Ted Hoff (co-inventor of the microprocessor); Carver Mead (VLSI concept); Intel CEO Paul Otellini; and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Grove said the patent system is slouching toward the model that precipitated the financial crisis in the U.S. Not today, in his eyes. "The patent product brings financial derivatives to mind," he said. "Derivatives have a complex relationship with an underlying asset. While there's nothing wrong with them in principle, their unfettered use has damaged the financial services industry and possibly the entire economy.

Hynix Agrees to Pay Rambus $397 Mln Settlement

The decade-old patent infringement battle between Rambus and, well, pretty much everybody has taken another step towards closure, with the U.S. District Court for the North District of California entering a final judgment against Hynix for a total of $397 million. Of that figure, $134 million will cover patent infringement between December 31, 2005, while another $215 million will cover infringement from January 1, 2006, through the end of January 2009. Rambus was also awarded another $48 million in interest."We are pleased with the Court's decision and are gratified by the tremendous time and energy the Court has dedicated to this matter," said Rambus senior VP and general counsel Thomas Lavelle, in a statement. "Though this case has been long and arduous, we remain steadfast in our commitment to seek fair compensation for the use of our patented innovations."
Hynix, for its part, has complied with the orders of the court, but says it disagrees with the judgement and may pursue an appeal to the Federal Circuit, and notes that another court found Rambus destroyed evidence, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently issues rulings finding Rambus's patents invalid. Moving forward, Hynix will have to pay Rambus royalties on net sales of particular memory products from January 31, 2009, through Paril 18, 2010: the amounts are 1 percent for SDR SDRAM products and 4.25 percent for DDR SDRAM products, with the latter rate applying to DDR, DDR2, DDR3, GDDR, GDDR2, GDDR3 SDRAM, and DDR SGRAM products. Budget PCs could help Taiwanese firms in downturn

Thinking small might help Taiwan's computer industry emerge from the global downturn as an even bigger global player.Taiwan-made mini-laptops burst onto the world's electronics scene with an estimated 11 million units sold last year. This year, sales could hit 22 million units, according to several analysts. In comparison, 120 million standard laptops are expected to be churned out this year.
While the worldwide computer market is suffering through its worst sales in years, one bright spot is coming from the mini-laptops known as "netbooks," which appeal to the budget-conscious in tough times.Growth in netbooks could be well timed for Taiwanese contract manufacturers, which need to keep their assembly lines busy during a falloff in orders for conventional laptops and desktops. Some 85 percent of all laptops are made by Taiwanese companies.
AsusTek and Acer netbooks are among the top-selling computers listed by Amazon.com, the leading online retailer, and Business Computer News Ranking, a Japanese market research firm. And sales of those computers figure to help Acer and AsusTek raise their profiles abroad with consumers who might remember those brands when shopping for desktops and standard laptops, said Tu Tze-chen, head of research at Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute.

imagine an alternative reality in which power wasn't delivered by cables but transmitted wirelessly through the ether. It sounds like science fiction, but as we found out during a visit to Intel's funky Seattle research lab, it's very real indeed.
Imagine a world where you never worried that your laptop's battery might lose the will to live. Or one in which the viper's nest of power cables that nestles behind your PC vanished in a puff of technology.Of course, you could argue that wireless power is nothing new. After all, induction based wireless systems are commercially available. But the problem with induction is that the power delivered falls off exponentially as you move an object away from the source. It's a major constraint.

Are Intel's solid state drives broken?

A recent report by website PC Perspective suggests that due to a combination of the way the X25-M handles write commands and the wear-leveling algorithms Intel has implemented, both read and write speeds decline markedly with heavy use.
Intel's X25-M solid state disk drive was one of the performance revelations of 2008. But evidence is now emerging that the drives suffer from near catastrophic performance degradation over time.In hindsight, the X25-M's apparent woes are not enormously surprising. It's still early days for SSD technology and pretty much every drive currently available suffers from a few foibles.
In the long run, we've little doubt Intel will address and solve the problem. But for now – and given the hefty price Intel charges for the X25-M - we can only recommend buyers steer clear. Exactly what the implications are for existing owners is another matter altogether.

Intel to close Shanghai plant amid global crisis:statement

The world's largest chip maker Intel Corp said Thursday it would shut down an assembly and test factory in Shanghai and move it to a city in China's far west due to the global economic crisis.it was still going ahead with the construction of a plant in the northeast Chinese city of Dalian. The cost of this plant was previously given as 2.5 billion dollars.
"The economic downturn has had an enormous impact on the semiconductor sector, forcing companies to take measures to cut costs," said Liu Liang, an analyst with Industrial Securities, according to state-run Xinhua news agency.The consolidation, which will take place over the next 12 months, came "as a result of current economic conditions", the statement said.
The move will affect about 2,000 employees, who will be offered jobs in the western city of Chengdu or other Chinese locations where Intel operates, the US-based company said in a statement.Intel plans to keep a research and development centre in Shanghai, which will also remain the China headquarters for the company.

IBM and Texas Instruments join layoff list

IBM and Texas Instruments (TI) have become the latest technology firms to announce mass job cuts.BM, meanwhile, has yet to issue any official total, but the layoffs are believed to be in the thousands. The Wall Street Journal put the figure at 2,800, while Associated Press cited labour unions as estimating the total at more than 4,000.
The company estimates that the cuts will amount to $700m (£491m) in annual savings. TI expects to pay out roughly $300m (£210m) in severance and other charges relating to the cuts.
TI revealed in its latest earnings call that slowing demand linked to the economic crisis will force the company to cut roughly 12 per cent of its staff, 3,400 jobs in total. Around 1,600 employees will take voluntary retirement and departure deals, and 1,800 will be laid off.

IBM advances research through Cloud Computing to help solve real-world problems

The Qatar Cloud Computing Initiative, driven by three universities, will open up its cloud infrastructure to local businesses and industries to test applications and complete various projects, including seismic modeling and the exploration for oil and gas. The development of this cloud computing center will be based on a phased approach. Initially, the universities will collaborate with IBM on building the infrastructure. Next, they will collaborate on developing applications that will leverage the Hadoop programming model as a first step in improving the local knowledge of this new programming model.
Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, Qatar University, Texas A&M University at Qatar One of the first projects to bring cloud computing to the Middle East, the Qatar Cloud Computing Initiative, is operational and initially located at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. Idea to Integrate Spice's IT Ops

The migration and integration will be carried out by IBM. As part of the deal, IBM will manage all IT operations and services for IDEA s business in Punjab and Karnataka. In addition, IBM will migrate the IT help desk services to its centralized helpdesk in Pune.
After completing the transition, IBM will manage IT operations in the two service areas, under the existing outsourcing services contract with IDEA as per revenue sharing model.

The deal builds on the existing 10-year business transformation pact that IBM had signed with IDEA Cellular in March 2007 to integrate, innovate and transform Idea's business processes and IT infrastructure. The complete integration, transition and migration of the IT operations and business processes of Spice Communications with Idea is expected to be completed within 27 months and is valued at approx US$19.2 million (Rs. 86 crores).

AMD unleashes triple-core, 5 new quad-cores Processors

The TDP for both models is 95W. We are still waiting on pricing information, but it looks like they will be a bit over US$150.The next piece of news dropped concerned new quad-core processors, including the Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition and Phenom X4 9750. These are additions to AMD’s quad-core lineup that will run at 2.5GHz and 2.4GHz, with TDP ratings of 125W. The new in the 95W TDP are the 9650 and the 9550, which will come in at 2.3GHz and 2.2GHz. So, nothing groundbreaking, but the larger point is that AMD is aiming to make quad-core accessible, while maintaining it as the company’s high-end offering. A quad-core Phemon matched with the 790 chipset is the companies top-shelf offering for gaming, supposing you also pony up the dough for a competitive video card. These are bug-free B3 revision processors.
Everything hasn’t exactly been great for AMD lately, but the plucky chip maker has some news for us today. Despite the tough times, the company earned a number of positive reactions from the recent 780G announcement, and it is following that up with three announcement today.First, triple-core is finally here. We have been hearing about this for months, and after all complaints about triple-core being nothing more than failed quad-core processors, consumers will be able to find out for themselves. The triple core Phenoms will launch as mainstream processors, aimed at users who are interested in additional performance relative to dual-core offerings, without having to substantially increase the amount they are spending. AMD says that triple-core Phenoms will be ideal for budget-minded users who have high-definition content in mind, and that the processor will be a great match for 780G.So far, we know about the Phenom 8600 (2.3GHz) and 8400 (2.1GHz). They will have L1 cache sizes of 64K of instruction and 64K of data cache per core (512KB total L1) and L2 will hold 512KB of L2 data cache per core (2MB total L2 per processor). These are 65 nm processors that are backwards compatible with AM2 motherboards.
